SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Vehicles equipped with a power antenna may have poor AM radio reception due to corrosion at the antenna connection. This condition is most apparent
on weak AM signals or in a location that temporarily interferes with the signal, such as driving under a freeway overpass. The corrosion is caused by
water and salt spilling onto the antenna connection from the windshield cowl. Vehicles experiencing this condition should have the following procedure
performed.
PARTS REQUIRED:
1
Power Antenna
4469168
As Required
Silicone Rubber
4318025
Adhesive Sealant
As Required
Lubriplate
4549615
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This procedure involves replacement of the power antenna and cleaning of the antenna lead male connector.
1.
Remove the power antenna as described in the appropriate service manual.
2.
With very fine emery cloth, clean the mating cable male fitting of any white colored corrosion. If the mating cable is severely corroded, the cable
may need to be replaced.
3.
To improve the electrical connection, carefully pry the three fingers on the male fitting out approximately 0.040 inch (1.0 mm).
4.
Spread a very light coat of Lubriplate (PN 4549615) on the male connector to protect against future corrosion.
