Ignition Coil - Removal
4.7L V-8
An individual ignition coil (1) is used for each pair of spark plugs. Each coil attaches directly to the top of the eight upper bank of spark plugs.
Secondary cables (3) connect each coil to the eight lower bank of spark plugs. The coils themselves fit into machined holes in the cylinder head. Each
coil also has its own individual electrical connector (2). Note: The bolt used to mount the ignition coil is also the same bolt used to mount the intake
manifold. If replacing either one, or, all eight coils, check and re-torque all eight bolts.
A mounting bolt (3) secures each coil to the top of the intake manifold. The bottom of the coil is equipped with a rubber boot (4) to seal the spark plug
(5) to the coil. Inside each rubber boot is a spring. The spring is used for a mechanical contact between the coil and the top of the upper bank of spark
plugs. These rubber boots and springs are a permanent part of the coil and are not serviced separately. The rubber boot (4) is also used to seal the coil at
the opening into the cylinder head.
