Wiper Relay: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
A wiper relay (intermittent wipe relay) is used only on vehicles that are equipped with the optional Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS).
WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY
STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, SEAT BELT TENSIONER, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR
SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE
AIRBAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE
ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN
ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.
1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
2. Roll down the glove box from the instrument panel.

3. Reach through and above the inboard side of the glove box opening to access the wiper relay.
4. Remove the tape that secures the wiper relay and its connector to the instrument panel wire harness near the instrument panel cross body structural
support.
5. Pull down the wiper relay and the instrument panel wire harness take out into the instrument panel glove box opening far enough to access the
relay and its connector.
6. Remove the wiper relay by grasping it firmly and pulling it straight out from the instrument panel wire harness connector.
INSTALLATION

SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE
AIRBAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE
ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN
ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.
1. Position the wiper relay to the instrument panel wire harness connector through the glove box opening.
2. Align the wiper relay terminals with the terminal cavities in the instrument panel wire harness connector.
3. Push firmly and evenly on the top of the wiper relay until the terminals are fully seated in the terminal cavities in the instrument panel wire harness
connector.
4. Reach through and above the inboard side of the glove box opening to position the wiper relay and its wire harness connector back to the
instrument panel wire harness near the instrument panel cross body structural support and secure the relay to the harness with tape .
5. Roll the glove box back up into the instrument panel.
6. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
