Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Testing and Inspection
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE SWITCH
Exc. 1986-87 Models W/4-135 (2.2L) & 1987 Models W/4-153 (2.5L) & V6-181 (3.0L)
Test switch using a suitable ohmmeter. When switch is cold, continuity should not exist. When switch is warmed to approximately 105° F or above,
continuity should be present. Replace if defective.
ELECTRIC FAN MOTOR
ALL MODELS
Disconnect wire connector from fan motor terminal, then connect a 14 gauge jumper wire from battery to fan motor terminal. If fan motor does not
operate properly, replace fan motor.
ELECTRIC FAN MOTOR RELAY
Exc. 1986-87 Models W/4-135 (2.2L) & 1987 Models W/4-153 (2.5L) & V6-181 (3.0L)
The fan motor relay is used on Chrysler F.W.D. models equipped with A/C. The relay is located on the front lefthand shock absorber housing. If
radiator fan switch and fan motor test results are satisfactory, but fan motor will not operate, the fan motor relay is suspected. Replace relay, then
disconnect wire connector from radiator fan switch and connect a 14 gauge jumper wire between wire connector terminals. Place ignition switch in
Accessory position. Fan motor should operate.
RADIATOR FAN SWITCH
Exc. 1986-87 Models W/4-135 (2.2L) & 1987 Models W/4-153 (2.5L) & V6-181 (3.0L)
To check switch continuity, drain coolant until level is below switch. The switch can be viewed by looking downward through the radiator filler neck.
Disconnect electrical connector from switch and remove switch from radiator. Bring switch to a temperature of 208° F or higher using a suitable oil
bath, then check for switch continuity using an ohmmeter or suitable test lamp. If continuity is not indicated, replace switch.
