Volt Meter Gauge: Testing and Inspection
Instrument Cluster With Tachometer
Instrument Cluster Without Tachometer
1.
Remove the voltmeter assembly from the cluster.
2.
Connect a volt/ohmmeter between the B+ pin and the Ground pin. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and check voltmeter reading.

The dot on the vehicle's voltmeter corresponds to 13 volts measured between the ignition pin and ground pin.
3.
If the voltage varies, estimate proper gauge needle position by the actual voltage measured.
Multiple Gauge Malfunction
If the Voltmeter, Speedometer, Tachometer, and other gauges appear to be malfunctioning, proceed as follows:
1.
Remove the cluster.
2.
Check for ignition voltage at pin E of the red cluster connector.

If voltage is not present, repair open circuit.
3.
Check for ground continuity between pin C of the red cluster connector.

If a good ground is not present, repair open circuit.
4.
If circuits are OK and pins or connectors are not distorted, replace the printed circuit board.
