Headlamp Alignment Switch: Description and Operation
Description
DESCRIPTION
On vehicles so equipped, the headlamp leveling switch (1) is located adjacent to the headlamp switch (2) in the left outboard air outlet bezel (3) on the
instrument panel just outboard of the instrument cluster bezel. Only the switch bezel and thumbwheel are visible on the outer surface of the air outlet
bezel. The switch bezel is identified by an International Control and Display Symbol icon for Headlamp Leveling Control. The switch thumbwheel is
marked with the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3, which indicates each of the four switch detent positions. Each higher number represents a lower aiming position
of the headlamp beam relative to the road surface.
The black, molded plastic switch housing and bezel encloses the switch thumbwheel mechanism and the leveling switch circuitry including the switch
contacts and a series resistor configuration. The switch circuitry includes an integral internal backlighting element, which illuminates the switch markings
for visibility when the exterior lighting is turned ON. A connector receptacle is integral to the back of the switch housing. Molded plastic latch features
are integral to the upper and lower sides of the switch housing to secure the switch within a receptacle integral to the back side of the air outlet bezel. The
switch is connected to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out and connector of the vehicle wire harness.
The headlamp leveling switch cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if ineffective or damaged, the entire switch unit must be replaced.
