Power Steering Bleeding: Service and Repair
Power Steering Hydraulic System Bleeding
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Fill power steering pump to specification with recommended fluid.
3. Manually turn power steering pump by hand three or four revolutions.
4. Turn steering wheel with engine off, all the way to left and to the right several times.
5. Disable ignition system, on SOHC engines ground coil high tension cable. On DOHC engines disconnect wire harness connector at Distributor
coil pack.
6. While operating the starter motor intermittently, turn steering wheel to full left position, then full right position several times.
CAUTION:
Do not operate starter motor more than 15-20 seconds at a time without sufficient cool down time.
7. Connect ignition system wiring, then start engine. Run at idle only.
8. Recheck fluid level, then turn steering wheel to full left and to full right positions.
9. Ensure fluid level and composition of fluid in reservoir has not changed while engine is running or with engine stopped.
