Starter Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
WARNING: CHECK TO ENSURE THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL WITH THE PARKING BRAKE APPLIED.
CAUTION: Fuel and Ignition Systems must be disabled to prevent the engine from starting while performing any of the following tests.
Before diagnosis, inspect the battery and verify the battery state of charge and charge battery as necessary. Ensure that the starter and battery cables are
clean and tight.
Precautions:

Do not crank starter continuously for longer than 30 seconds.

Do not disconnect or short any lead wire while starter is cranking.

Disconnect the Automatic Shut Down (ASD) relay to disable fuel and ignition system.
Turn ignition switch to the start position:
1. Starter does not crank engine go to Diagnosis 1.
2. Starter cranks engine very slowly, go to Diagnosis 2.
3. Engine cranks but pinion does not disengage, go to Diagnosis 3.
Diagnosis 1
1. Turn ignition switch to the start position. Does starter solenoid click. If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, go to Step 3.
Starter Connections
2. Disconnect the C.T., M.T. and 50 terminal.
a. Using an Ohmmeter, check for continuity. Touch one lead to the 50 terminal and the other to the starter body.
b. If there is continuity, starter solenoid is OK. If no continuity, the hold-in winding has an open circuit. Replace starter.
3. Disconnect the cable from C terminal of the starter.
a. Briefly connect a jumper wire to the auxiliary jumper post and the other end to 50 terminal of the solenoid.
b. If solenoid operates, test ignition switch and starter relay. If solenoid does not operate, replace starter.
Diagnosis 2
Check starting system circuit, for battery voltage, cables, connectors free of corrosion and for tightness.
1. If not OK, clean, tighten cables and wires as necessary.
2. If circuits OK and battery is OK, replace starter.
Diagnosis 3
Check the operation of the ignition switch and starter relay
1. If OK, replace starter.
2. If not OK, repair as necessary.
