Ammeter Gauge: Testing and Inspection

When the ammeter fails to register correctly, the trouble may be in the alternator, battery, or the wiring from the ammeter to the alternator and battery.
Check connections at the ammeter, ignition switch, battery and alternator. Repair as necessary.
All wires with chafed, burned or broken insulation should be repaired or replaced. After repairs have been made, and all connections are tightened,
connect the battery cable and turn ignition switch to the On position. The needle should point slightly to the discharge (-) side.
Start engine and raise engine speed. The ammeter needle should then move to the charge side.
If the ammeter fails to operate correctly, replace the ammeter.
