Idle Speed: Adjustments

CURB IDLE SPEED, ADJUST

    The throttle plate stop screw is pre-set and does not directly control idle speed. Adjustment of this setting should be performed only as part of a full
EEC-IV diagnosis of irregular idle conditions or speeds. Incorrect idle speed control could result if position of throttle plate stop screw is not properly
adjusted as described below.

1.

Block wheels, apply parking brake, turn A/C-Heater off and shift transmission to Park of Neutral.

2.

Start engine and run until normal operating temperature is reached. Check for vacuum leaks downstream of the throttle plates.

3.

Check ignition timing and adjust if necessary.

4.

Stop engine, then disconnect air bypass valve assembly electrical connector.

5.

Remove PCV inlet line from PCV valve.

6.

Install .200 inch orifice (tool No. T86P-9600-A) into PCV inlet line.

7.

Start engine and idle in Drive on models with automatic transmission or Neutral on models with manual transmission.

8.

Adjust throttle plate stop screw as necessary to bring idle to 820-870 RPM on models with automatic transmission or 1015-1065 on models with
manual transmission.

9.

Stop engine, then restart and check idle speed and adjust as necessary..

10.

Stop engine, then restore all original connections.

11.

Ensure throttle plate is not binding in bore and throttle plate stop screw rests on pad with throttle closed.

12.

Start engine and run for 3-5 minutes and ensure idle speed remains within specifications.

FAST IDLE SPEED, ADJUST
    No provision is made for adjusting fast idle speed on these engines.
