Parking Brake - Does Not Ratchet On First Application

BRAKES - PARKING - CONTROL NOT RATCHETING PROPERLY ON FIRST APPLICATION - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 5/1/93

LIGHT TRUCK:
1991-93 AEROSTAR

ISSUE:
The parking brake control may not ratchet properly on the first application. This occurs because the self-adjusting ratchet and pawl are not fully engaged.

ACTION:
Install a new one-way adjust parking brake control and a front cable return spring which keeps the self-adjust ratchet and pawl fully engaged. Refer to
the following procedure for service details.

1.

Release the parking brake cable tension.

SELF-ADJUSTING SPRING LOCK-OUT

a.

Remove the boot cover from the parking brake control assembly.

b.

Place the control in the "released" position.

c.

With one person inside the vehicle, raise the vehicle on a hoist.

d.

Have another person pull down and hold the front cable.

e.

(The person inside) - Insert a steel pin through the self-adjusting spring lock-out holes in the lever and control assembly. This locks the
ratchet wheel in the "cable released" position, Figure 1.

NOTE:
LOCK-OUT PINS CAN BE MADE FROM A 1/80 (3.175 MM) STEEL ROD, 2" TO 3" (50.8 MM TO 76.2 MM) LONG.

Disconnect the front cable from the control. Remove the control.
