LIGHT TRUCK:

1990 AEROSTAR, RANGER

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to revise the repair procedure.

ISSUE:

A delayed upshift or no upshift condition may be caused by excessive wear of the # 4 thrust washer which then contaminates the transmission.

ACTION:

Inspect the transmission fluid for contamination and, if necessary, install a new # 4 thrust washer and high clutch drum assembly. Refer
to the following procedure for service details.

1.

Remove the transmission oil pan. Refer to the 1990 Aerostar/Ranger/Bronco II Truck Shop Manual, Section 07-01A, for removal information.

2.

Check the inside of the transmission oil pan for excessive yellowish bronze type contamination (metal shavings).

If no excessive yellowish bronze contamination is found, proceed to check for usual causes of abnormal shifts such as a stuck governor, main
control, etc.

If excessive yellowish bronze contamination is found, proceed to Step # 3.

3.

Remove the transmission assembly. Refer to the 1990 Aerostar/Ranger/Bronco II Truck Shop Manual, Section 07-01A, for service details.

4.

Check for excessive wear of the # 4 thrust washer and the surface of the high clutch drum assembly.

5.

Clean and repair transmission as necessary.

6.

Flush the oil cooler and cooler lines. Refer to the 1990 Aerostar/Ranger/Bronco II Truck Shop Manual, Sections 07-00A-1 through 07-02, for
service details.
