Camshaft: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Remove the valve cover, then the rocker shaft assemblies.
2. Remove the timing belt and the distributor.
3. To prevent camshaft rotation, position suitable open end wrench on flats on front part of camshaft, then remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt

and camshaft sprocket.

4. If camshaft oil seal requires replacement, use a suitable tool to drive camshaft front seal into cylinder head, then cut seal with side cutters and

remove seal.

CAUTION:  Use caution to prevent damaging bearing surface.

5. Remove camshaft thrust plate attaching bolt, then the thrust plate.
6. Carefully slide camshaft out of left side of cylinder head.

INSTALLATION

1. Lubricate camshaft journals and lobes.
2. Install camshaft and thrust plate. Tighten thrust plate bolts to 8-10 Nm (71-88 in lb).
3. Reverse procedure to install. If camshaft oil seal is to be replaced, install as follows:

a. Lubricate front seal bore and seal lip with engine oil.

b. Drive new seal into cylinder head using tool T87C-6019-A, or equivalent.

5. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolt to 49-61 Nm (36-45 ft lb).
