Brake Drum: Service and Repair

1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove hub cap, then the wheel and tire as an assembly.
3.
On vehicles with full-floating axles, remove brake drum as follows:
a. Loosen rear brake shoe adjustment screw.
b. Remove rear axle retaining bolts and lock washers, axle shaft, and gasket.
c. Remove wheel bearing locknut, lock washer, and adjusting nut.
d. Remove hub and drum from axle.
e. Remove brake drum to hub retaining screws, bolts, or bolts and nuts, then remove brake drum from hub.
4.
On vehicles with semi-floating axles, remove brake drum as follows:
a. Remove brake drum retaining nuts.
b. Remove brake drum. If brake lining is dragging on brake drum, back off brake adjustment by rotating adjustment screw.
5.
Install suitable clamp over ends of wheel cylinder.
6.
Contract brake shoes as follows:
a. Disengage adjusting lever from adjusting screw by pulling backward on adjusting lever, Fig. 1.
b. Move outboard side of adjusting screw upward and back off pivot nut as far as it will go.
7.
Pull adjusting lever, cable, and automatic adjuster spring down and toward rear to unhook pivot hook from large hole in secondary shoe web. Do
not pry pivot hook out of hole.
8.
Remove automatic adjuster spring and adjusting lever.
9.
Using suitable tool, remove secondary shoe to anchor spring, then the primary shoe to anchor spring.
10.
Unhook cable anchor and remove anchor pin plate, if equipped.
11.
Remove cable guide from secondary shoe.
12.
Remove shoe hold-down springs, shoes, adjusting screw, pivot nut, and socket. Note color and position of each hold down spring for proper
assembly.
13.
On rear brakes, remove parking brake link and spring, then disconnect parking brake cable from parking brake lever.
14.
Remove rear brake secondary shoe and disassemble parking brake lever from shoe by removing retaining clip and spring washer.
