To prevent repeat servicing on engines for suspected oil leakage at crankshaft seals, determine if the leak is actually from the seal or from another source.
The new one-piece rear crankshaft seal has proven to be significantly more reliable that the rope or split lip designs formerly used.

Performing the oil leak "Snoop Pressure Check" outlined in the 1983 Shop Manual Section 21-01 and TSB 80-15-5 will accurately identify the location
of the leak. This diagnostic check is also applicable to engines having the two-piece rope or split lip seals.
