This communication is published to remind dealer sales and service personnel of current oil change maintenance requirements.
All 1983 cars and light truck engines basically have an oil change interval requirement every 12 months or 7,500 miles, and a 3,000 mile severe service
interval except for the following engines that require unique basic intervals:
1.6L EFI Turbo

5,000 mi basic/3,000 severe service
2.3L EFI Turbo

5,000 mi basic/3,000 severe service
2.2L TK Diesel (Truck) -
5,000 mi basic/3,000 severe service
2.4L BMW Diesel
-
5,000 mi basic/3,000 severe service
4.9L Truck (Gasoline)
-
10,000 mi basic/3,000 severe service
6.9L Diesel (Truck)
-
5,000 mi basic/3,000 severe service
Light Truck over 8,500 -

An example of the severe service conditions and interval requirements depicted in the 1983 Escort Owner Guide are as follows:
"If your driving habits include:
Frequent short trips of 10 miles (16 kilometers) or less when the temperature remains below +10~ F (-12~ C) for 60 days or more - sustained high speed
driving during hot weather +90~ F (+32~ C) - towing a trailer for long distances - driving in severe dust conditions - extensive idling, such as police,
taxi, or door-to-door delivery use - the following severe service maintenance intervals apply."

Engine Oil - Change every 3 months or 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers), whichever occurs first.

Oil Filter - Replace at alternate oil changes.

Spark Plugs - Check and regap every 6,000 miles (9,600 kilometers) - not required for severe dust conditions.

Air Cleaner and Crankcase Emission Air Filters - If
operating in severe dust conditions, ask your dealer for proper replacement intervals.

Automatic Transaxle Fluid - Change every 30,000 miles (48,000 kilometers) - not required for severe dust, short trips, or extensive idling.
If your vehicle accumulates 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) or more per month, or is used in continuous stop and go service, change the automatic
transaxle fluid every 30,000 miles (48,000 kilometers).
It is suggested that this information be passed to all dealer service and sales personnel in order that mention of the unique intervals can be made to
owners at time of new car delivery, or at time the vehicle is brought in for normal service.
