ISSUE:
Oil consumption (less than 900 miles per quart) may be caused by a missing PCV valve baffle, leaking oil gallery cup plug at rear of tappet
valley (passenger car only), mislocated/damaged valve stem oil seals and/or leaking intake manifold gaskets.
ACTION:
To reduce oil consumption, use the following service procedure.
1.
Check for external oil leakage per Shop Manual General Repair, Section 21-01, and TSB Article No. 86-11-16. Correct any leakage that could
cause oil consumption. If no leakage is found, proceed to Step 2 for passenger car or Step 3 for light truck.

Remove upper/lower intake manifolds. Refer to Section 21-21 of the appropriate Shop Manual for removal and installation procedure. On
passenger cars, inspect to see if the PCV baffle is in place on the underside of intake manifold. Replace lower intake manifold assembly (E6SZ-
9424-A) if baffle is missing. See Figure 10.

With intake manifold removed, take special note of rear oil gallery crossover cup plug at rear center of lifter valley (on passenger car
engines). This plug may be leaking oil if it is cocked or if hole was not properly machined. Clean off this area with solvent and seal with
two-part epoxy cement. See Figure 11. Replace lower intake manifold, gaskets, and end seals. Apply adhesive (D7AZ-19B508-A) to both
sides of front and rear end seals before installing intake manifold assembly. Retorque per TSB Article No. 86-20-4. Final torque on all lower
