Workshop table
  1. Remove the air cowl grille.
    For additional information, refer to: Grill - Windlauf (501-02 Vorderwagen - Anbauteile, Removal and Installation).
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    For additional information, refer to: Batterie abklemmen (414-01 Batterie, Befestigung und Batteriekabel, General Procedures).

  1. Remove the oil filler pipe.
    • Release the securing clip and rotate the oil filler pipe counterclockwise.

  1. Remove the engine cover.
  1. Remove the air cleaner.
    For additional information, refer to: Luftfilter - 1.8L Duratec-HE (MI4)/2.0L Duratec-HE (MI4) (303-12, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove the battery tray.
    For additional information, refer to: Batteriekonsole - 1.6L Duratec-16V (Sigma)/1.8L Duratec-HE (MI4)/2.0L Duratec-HE (MI4) (414-01 Batterie, Befestigung und Batteriekabel, Removal and Installation).

  1. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the battery terminal clamp.

  1. Detach the ground cables from the wheel housing.

  1. Remove the central junction box (CJB) cover.

  1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness connector.

  1. Disconnect the plug of the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).

  1. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor connector.
  1. Remove the radiator.
    For additional information, refer to: Kühler (303-03C Kühlsystem - 1.8L Duratec-HE (MI4)/2.0L Duratec-HE (MI4), Removal and Installation).

  1. Using the special tool, disconnect the coolant hose from the coolant outlet connector.

  1. Detach the coolant hose from the heater core.

  1. Detach the coolant hose from the coolant expansion tank using the special tool.

  1. Remove the engine coolant degas bottle.

  1. Detach the brake booster vacuum pipe from the intake manifold.

  1. Disconnect the fuel supply line using the Special Tool.
  1. Remove the left-hand halfshaft.
    For additional information, refer to: Linke Antriebswelle (205-04 Vorderradantriebswellen, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove the right-hand halfshaft.
    For additional information, refer to: Rechte Antriebswelle (205-04 Vorderradantriebswellen, Removal and Installation).

22. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration(s) and table(s).

Removal Details

Item 6 : A/C compressor

CAUTION:
CAUTION:Support the A/C compressor before removing the retaining bolts and secure it at one side to prevent stress on the refrigerant lines.

  1. Detach the air conditioning line bracket.

Item 11 : Catalytic converter retaining nuts

NOTE:
NOTE:Discard the nuts.

Item 12 : Catalytic converter

NOTE:
NOTE:Discard the exhaust manifold gasket.

Item 13 : Automatic transmission central connector

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The automatic transmission contains components and assemblies which are sensitive to electrostatic charging.
    Detach the automatic transmission central connector.
    • Release the central connector by turning the catch counter-clockwise and detach.

Item 14 : Transmission fluid feed and return lines

  1. Unclip the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines from the fluid line bracket.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Whenever releasing the transmission cooling system fluid, take care to prevent fluid scalding. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Close off the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Mark the position of the feed and return lines as an aid to installation.
    Detach the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines from the automatic transmission.
    1. Push the transmission fluid cooler feed and return line quick release connector in direction of arrow.
    1. Press together the retaining tabs and detach the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines from the automatic transmission.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

Item 15 : Selector lever cable

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not kink the selector lever cable.
    Detach the selector lever cable from the transmission.
    1. Detach the selector lever cable from the selector mechanism.
    1. Lift the locking tab, press the locking pins together and detach the selector lever cable from the abutment.

Item 16 : Front engine mounting

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Support the engine and transaxle assembly on wooden blocks.
    Secure the engine and transmission on the workshop table using suitable retaining straps.

  1. Carefully lower the vehicle until the engine / transmission assembly is supported by the workshop table.

  1. Remove the refrigerant line retaining bracket.

  1. Remove the front engine mounting nuts and bolts.
    • Discard the nuts.

  1. Remove the front engine mounting stud.

Item 17 : Rear engine mounting bolt

  1. Remove the bolt of the rear engine mounting.
  1. Raise the vehicle and remove the engine and transmission assembly.
    For additional information, refer to: Anheben mit Hebebühne (100-02 Fahrzeug anheben, Description and Operation).

Item 18 : Transmission flange lower bolts

  1. Attach the engine / transmission assembly to the engine lifting bracket using the special tool.

Item 19 : Starter motor connectors

  1. Detach the battery positive lead and the ignition switch cable from the starter motor solenoid switch.

Item 25 : Transmission

  1. Remove the torque converter nuts (three nuts).
    • Discard the torque converter nuts.
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the torque converter remains in the torque converter housing.
    Detach the transmission from the engine.
