General Equipment
Transmission jack
Retaining straps
  1. Remove the battery tray.
    For additional information, refer to: Batteriekonsole - 1.6L Diesel/2.0L Diesel.
  1. Remove the air cleaner.
    For additional information, refer to: Luftfilter - 1.6L Diesel.
  1. Remove the front wheels.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove the headlamp assembly on both sides.
    For additional information, refer to: Scheinwerfereinheit.

  1. Attach the special tool on both sides (right-hand side shown).

  1. Remove the engine cover.
  1. Raise the vehicle.
    For additional information, refer to: Anheben mit Hebebühne.

  1. Remove the engine undershield.

  1. Remove the lower radiator splash guard.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

11. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration(s) and table(s).

Removal Details

Item 1 : Charge air cooler outlet pipe

  1. Detach the intercooler outlet pipe.

Item 2 : Selector lever cable

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not kink the selector lever cable.
    Detach the selector lever cable from the transmission.
    1. Detach the selector lever cable from the selector mechanism.
    1. Lift the locking tab, press the locking pins together and detach the selector lever cable from the abutment.

Item 3 : Transmission upper bolts

  1. Remove the transmission upper bolts.
    • Detach the ground cable from the transmission.

Item 4 : Charge air cooler outlet pipe

  1. Raise the vehicle.
    For additional information, refer to: Anheben mit Hebebühne.

  1. Detach the charge air cooler outlet pipe from the transmission and remove downwards.

Item 5 : Radiator support bracket

  1. Detach the left-hand radiator support bracket.
    • Loosen the radiator support bracket front bolt by three turns.
    • Remove the rear radiator support bracket bolt.

  1. Detach the right-hand radiator support bracket.
    • Loosen the radiator support bracket front bolt by three turns.
    • Remove the rear radiator support bracket bolt.
    • Move the radiator aside.

Item 6 : Exhaust pipe

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Excessive bending of the flexible exhaust pipe can cause damage that may lead to component failure.
    Protect the flexible exhaust pipe with a suitable support sleeve or reinforcement.

  1. Detach the catalytic converter from the flexible exhaust pipe.
    • Discard the gasket and retaining nuts.

  1. Unscrew the bolt from the catalytic converter bracket.

Item 7 : Engine roll restrictor

  1. Remove the engine roll restrictor.

Item 8 : Right-hand front drive halfshaft

  1. Remove the right-hand front drive halfshaft with intermediate shaft.
    For additional information, refer to: Front Halfshaft RH (205-04 Front Drive Halfshafts, Removal and Installation).

Item 9 : Left-hand front drive halfshaft

  1. Remove the left-hand front drive halfshaft.
    For additional information, refer to: Front Halfshaft LH (205-04 Front Drive Halfshafts, Removal and Installation).

Item 10 : Starter motor

  1. Remove the vacuum reservoir (shown with starter motor cable removed for clarity).
    • Detach the vacuum lines.
    • Remove the vacuum reservoir bolt.
  1. Remove the starter motor.

    Starter Motor - 1.8L Duratec-HE (MI4)/2.0L Duratec-HE (MI4) (303-06 Starting System, Removal and Installation).

  1. Remove the torque converter nuts (three nuts).
    • Discard the torque converter nuts.

  1. Remove the torque converter housing cover bolts.

Item 11 : Rear engine mount

  1. Install the special tools.

  1. Install the special tools.

  1. Install the special tools.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Remove the engine rear mount retaining bolt.

Item 12 : Rear engine mount bracket

  1. Remove the engine rear mount bracket (engine rear mount shown removed for clarity).

Item 13 : Transmission

  1. Unclip the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines from the fluid line bracket.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Beware, risk of scalding when draining transmission fluid. Failure to observe this instruction can lead to injury.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Close off the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Mark the position of the feed and return lines as an aid to installation.
    Detach the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines from the automatic transmission.
    1. Push the transmission fluid cooler feed and return line quick release connector in direction of arrow.
    1. Press together the retaining tabs and detach the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines from the automatic transmission.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The automatic transmission contains components and assemblies which are sensitive to electrostatic charging.
    Detach the automatic transmission central connector.
    1. Release the central connector by turning the catch counter-clockwise and detach.

  1. Remove the transmission lower bolts.
    • Remove the bolt from the catalytic converter bracket.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Support the transmission with suitable wooden blocks.
    Secure the transmission on the transmission jack using suitable retaining straps.

  1. Remove the right-hand transmission bolts.
    1. Remove the vacuum reservoir bracket.
    1. Remove the bolt.

  1. Remove the left-hand transmission bolts.
    • Unscrew the upper left-hand bolt until it is completely loosened.
    • Remove the lower left-hand bolt.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Ensure that the torque converter remains in the housing.
    Remove the transmission lower bolt.
    • Remove the bolt while pulling the transmission away from the engine.
  1. Support the transmission using the transmission jack and remove.
