Oil Pressure Warning Lamp/Indicator: Description and Operation
With Conventional Instrument Cluster
Oil pressure indication system consists of the following:
-
oil pressure gauge
-
oil pressure switch (located in the engine block)
-
necessary circuitry
Oil Pressure Gauge
The oil pressure gauge is a part of Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge assembly.
The magnetic gauge has the following features:
-
It consists of two primary coils, one of which is wound at a 90 degree angle to the other one.
-
The coils form a magnetic field which varies in direction according to the resistance of the oil pressure switch connected between them.
-
A permanent magnet, to which a shaft and pointer are attached, rotates to align to this primary field, resulting in pointer position.
-
The bobbin/coil assembly is pressed into a metal housing. The bobbin has two holes for dial mounting.
-
There is no adjustment, calibration or maintenance required for these gauges.
CAUTION: Do not remove magnetic gauge pointers; the gauge cannot be recalibrated.
Oil Pressure Switch
The oil pressure switch:
-
is threaded into the cylinder block.
-
reacts to the pressure of the engine oil in the lube passage.
-
is open with low engine oil pressure and closes with oil pressure greater than 6 psi.
