Valve Spring: Removal and Replacement
Valve Springs
Removal
1. WARNING: Before servicing a vehicle equipped with a fire suppression system, depower the system by following the procedure in Fire
Suppression System. Failure to follow the instructions may result in serious personal injury.
With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Remove the camshaft roller followers.
3. Position the piston at the top of the stroke.
4. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the spark plugs, damage may occur to the cylinder head or spark plug.
Remove the spark plugs. For additional information, refer to Ignition System.
5. Install compressed air in the cylinder to hold both valves in position.
6. CAUTION: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve to fall into the
cylinder. If air pressure must be removed, support the valve prior to removal or engine damage may occur.
Using the special tool, compress the valve springs.
7. Remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring retainer and the valve spring.
Installation
1. Position the valve spring and the valve spring retainer.
2. Install the special tool between the valve spring coils to prevent valve stem seal damage.
