Parking Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2.
Remove caliper, then rotor assembly.
3.
Drain differential fluid from the axle by removing cover.
4.
Remove lock bolt from differential pinion shaft, then pinion shaft from differential.
5.
Push axle shaft inward to gain access to axle shaft C-lock, then remove C-lock.
6.
Remove ABS speed sensor, then axle shaft from axle housing.
7.
Disconnect brake cable from lever, then brake shoe retaining pins and springs.
8.
Set adjuster assembly to shortest length.
9.
Slightly pull shoe assemblies away from backing plate, then spread to remove adjuster.
10.
Lift shoe assemblies over support, then remove shoes and actuating lever as an assembly.
11.
Install lower return springs and actuating lever to brake shoe assemblies.
12.
Ensure actuator boot is correctly positioned through backing plate.
13.
Install shoe assemblies by first inserting lever through boot and lowering shoes into position.
14.
Install upper return (adjuster) spring, then adjuster assembly.
15.
Install brake shoe retaining pins and springs.
16.
Connect brake cable to lever.
17.
Slide axle shaft into axle housing until the splines enter the side gear.
CAUTION: Ensure care is taken not to damage wheel bearing seal or ABS sensor ring.
18.
Push axle shaft at the flange inward, then install the C-lock at the end of the shaft.
19.
Pull shaft outboard until each C-lock enters the recess of the side gears.
20.
Apply Stud & Bearing Mount EOAZ-19554-BA or equivalent to pinion shaft lock bolt, then install pinion shaft and pinion shaft lock bolt.
21.
Torque pinion lock bolt to 15-29 ft lb.
22.
Clean axle housing cover, then apply a 3/16 inch bead of silicone rubber sealant D6AZ-19562-B or equivalent.
23.
Install axle housing cover, then torque retaining bolts in a diagonal pattern to 25-34 ft lb.
24.
Fill axle with lubricant until fluid level is 1/4 inch below bottom of fill hole.
25.
Center brake shoes on backing plate, then using a 8 inch micrometer, adjust brake shoes until a measurement of 7.065-7.072 inch is obtained.
26.
Install rotor and caliper.
