Vacuum Brake Booster: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Pump brake pedal several times to exhaust any vacuum in the booster.
2. Disconnect master cylinder from booster and position aside.
CAUTION: It is not necessary to disconnect brake lines, but care should be taken to avoid twisting or kinking them.
3. Disconnect manifold vacuum hose from booster check valve.
4. Working under instrument panel, disconnect stop lamp switch electrical connector under instrument panel.
5. Remove stop lamp switch retaining pin. Slide switch off brake pedal pin enough so outer plate of switch clears the pin, then remove switch from
pin.
6. Remove booster-to-dash panel attaching screws.
7. Slide booster pushrod, nylon washers and bushing off brake pedal pin.
8. Move booster forward until booster studs clear dash panel, then remove booster.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure proper clearance between pushrod and master cylinder exists.
b. Torque booster-to-dash panel retaining nuts to 16-21 ft lb.
c. Torque master cylinder retaining nuts to 16-21 ft lb.
