LIGHT TRUCK:
1997 ECONOLINE
ISSUE:
The air bag lamp may illuminate and Diagnostic Code 21 (ground fault), B1921 with New Generation Star (NGS), may be stored in memory. This may
be caused by electromagnetic interference generated within the electrical system.
ACTION:
Relocate the Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor ground to shorten the distance from the ground to the monitor. Shortening the ground should reduce the
possibility of interference in the electrical system resulting in a false Diagnostic Code 21 or B1921. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Retrieve any air bag codes in memory by following the procedures outlined in the 1997 Econoline Workshop Manual, Section 501-20B. If flash
out code B1921 (with NGS) exists, perform the following Steps. If other codes exist, refer to the Workshop Manual and repair as required.
2.
Disconnect the battery(s) following the procedure outlined in Section 414-01 of the 1997 Econoline Workshop Manual. If a vehicle is equipped
with dual batteries, both batteries must be disconnected to prevent inadvertent activation of the air bag system. Wait 1 minute before proceeding in
order to discharge the system.
3.
Remove the passenger side kick panel. Refer to Figure 1.
