Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair

REMOVAL 

1. Disconnect the battery.

WARNING:  On vehicles equipped with an auxiliary battery, both the negative and positive battery cables must be disconnected.  

2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the driveshaft.

NOTE:  To maintain initial driveshaft balance, mark the driveshaft yoke and axle flange so they will be installed in their original positions.

4. Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).

(1) Disconnect the electrical connector.
(2) Remove the bolt.
(3) Remove the VSS.

5. Disconnect the catalyst monitoring sensor harness connectors. Remove the harness bracket.
6. Remove the transmission insulator and retainer. 

7. Use the (A) Seal Remover and the (B) Impact Slide Hammer to remove the (C) extension housing seal.
