Cylinder Head - Torque Procedure Revision

SHOP MANUAL - REVISION TO CYLINDER HEAD TORQUE PROCEDURE FOR 4.9L ENGINES
LIGHT TRUCKS ALL MODEL YEARS - E, F AND BRONCO
The Shop Manual indicates a three-step torque procedure with specific torques for each step. These torques are a maximum value and should not be
exceeded to keep from over-stressing the bolts.

During installation of the cylinder head, follow the procedure found in the Light Truck Shop Manual, and use the following torque sequence and values:
Tighten the cylinder bolts in sequence (Figure 17). The bolts are tightened in three (3) steps:
1st step - Torque all bolts to 50-55 ft.lbs. (67-75 N-m).
2nd step - Torque all bolts to 60-65 ft.lbs. (82-88 N-m).
3rd step - Torque all bolts to 70-85 ft.lbs. (94-115 N-m).
When cylinder head bolts have been tightened, it is not necessary to retighten the bolts after extended operation.
