About the Escort
These are the North American Escorts, sold from 1981 to 2003. The Escort replaced the Pinto and became America's best-selling car for much of the 1980s. It began as a "world car" designed with Ford of Europe, but from 1991 it used Mazda 323 underpinnings and had little in common with the European Escort. The Focus replaced it, and the last Escort sedans were built for fleets in 2002.
What these manuals cover
- 1982–1990 (first generation): the 1.6-litre CVH four, including the 1984 turbo, a 1.9-litre from mid-1985, and a Mazda 2.0-litre diesel.
- 1991–1996 (second generation): the 1.9-litre SOHC, plus the Mazda 1.8-litre DOHC in the Escort GT.
- 1997–2002 (third generation): the 2.0-litre SOHC sedan and wagon, and the ZX2 coupe with a 2.0-litre DOHC engine.
Tip: the Mercury Lynx (1980s) and Mercury Tracer are the Escort's twins. For European Escorts, see Escort/Orion (EU/UK).
