Accelerator Pedal: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The position of the throttle valve is regulated by the accelerator cable and pedal assembly for driver control of engine speed.
Accelerator Pedal And Linkage
OPERATION
A ferrule attached to the cable end engages the throttle control lever (9A776) at the throttle body (9E926). From the throttle control lever, the
accelerator cable enters a casing that routes through the engine compartment to the dash panel (01610). At the accelerator pedal and shaft (9725), a
plastic insert with lock tabs is used to secure the cable.
The accelerator pedal and shaft mounts to the accelerator shaft retainer (9D747) which is secured to the front floor pan (11135). A pin extending
through the retainer provides the pedal pivot point. When the accelerator pedal is pressed, its rotation on the pivot pin pulls the cable and opens
the throttle valve ( the accelerator cable connects to the lower half of the throttle control lever). When released, an accelerator shaft spring (9760)
returns the accelerator pedal and shaft and throttle valve to the idle position.
NOTE: Vehicles equipped with speed control have an accelerator pedal shaft lever (9B771) located on the accelerator shaft retainer. The vehicle
speed control actuator (9A825) connects to a retainer at the top of the accelerator pedal shaft lever.
