Valve Clearance: Adjustments
The 1.6L engines are equipped with overhead camshafts and hydraulic lash adjusters. Valve stem to rocker arm clearance is measured with the tappet
completely collapsed. Perform the following procedure when measuring valve tappet clearance. Some engines may incorporate oversize valve
tappets. The cylinder head assembly will be identified by metal stamping .254 OT on the machined pad below the rocker arm rail and above the
No. 1 exhaust port.
1.
Rotate engine until No. 1 piston is on TDC of compression stroke.
2.
Position suitable hydraulic lifter compressor tool onto rocker arm and slowly apply pressure to bleed tappet. Continue applying pressure until lifter
plunger bottoms. Hold tappet in this position and check clearance between rocker arm and valve stem tip with feeler gauge. Collapsed tappet gap
should be .059---.194 in. If clearance is less than specified, check for worn or damaged fulcrums, tappets or camshaft lobes.
3.
With No. 1 piston on TDC of compression stroke, check the following valves:
a. Intake Nos. 1 and 2; exhaust No. 1.

Rotate crankshaft 180° from above position and check the following valves:
a. No. 3 intake & No. 3 exhaust.
4.
Rotate crankshaft another 180° from above position and check the following valves:
a. Intake No. 4; exhaust Nos. 2 and 4.
