Inspection and Repair After A Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Deployment
SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM
WARNING: A new ECS module must be installed if the air bag modules have deployed.
WARNING: The ECS orientation is critical for correct system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an SRS system has been involved in a
collision in which the center tunnel area has been damaged, inspect the mounting and bracket for deformation. If damaged, a new ECS must
be installed whether or not the air bag modules have deployed. In addition, make sure the area of the sensor mounting is restored to its
original condition.
WARNING: The electronic crash sensor (ECS) module orientation is critical for proper system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an air
bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) has been involved in a collision in which the center console area has been damaged, inspect the
mounting and bracket for deformation. If damaged, the ECS module should be replaced. In addition, make sure the area of the ECS module
mounting is restored to its original condition.
Inspect the sensor wiring and the wiring harness for any damage that may have occurred as a result of the accident. Replace, as required.
Steering Column and Clockspring
1. NOTE: If the collision involved an air bag deployment, the steering column tube may have been loaded sufficiently to deform the steering
column mounting brackets or damage the column wiring.
Inspect the steering column structure and clockspring wiring.
2. Replace any damaged components.
WARNING: If replacing a deployed air bag module, always install a new air bag electronic crash sensor (ECS) module.
WARNING: Vehicle sensor orientation is critical for proper system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an air bag supplemental restraint
system (SRS) is involved in a collision, inspect the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail for deformation. If damaged, install a new
sensor whether or not the air bag is deployed.
