Starter Relay: Description and Operation
The starter motor solenoid relay switch:

Receives a start signal from the ignition switch as long as the digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor is in the PARK or NEUTRAL position.

Switches battery power to the starter motor solenoid S terminal when it receives the START signal from the ignition switch which allows the
starter motor to engage and start the engine.
