This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to specify affected engine as 4.0L SOHC.
ISSUE:
A vibration may be felt and "booming" noise may be heard at idle on some vehicles. This may be caused by the engine-to-exhaust vibration being
transferred through the exhaust system-to-body mounting points.
ACTION:
Replace the muffler/tailpipe assembly with a revised muffler/tailpipe assembly and U-bolt clamp, and reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
NOTE:
REGIONAL APPROVAL MUST BE OBTAINED WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Remove the muffler/tailpipe assembly.
2.
Install the muffler/tailpipe assembly using the revised U-bolt clamp.
3.
Torque the bolts at the ball and flare joint equally to 40 +/- 6 N.m (29.5 +/- 4 lb-ft). This joint must be secured before securing the slip joint.
4.
Make sure the tailpipe hanger rod has a minimum clearance of 19 mm (0.75") to the frame rail prior to tightening the U-bolt (Step 5). A 25 mm
(1") spacer block may be used between the tailpipe hanger rod and the frame rail to achieve this clearance.
5.
Torque the U-bolt nuts equally to 80 +/- 12 N.m (59 +/- 9 lb-ft).
6.
Reprogram the PCM. Refer to the PCM Application Chart for the correct calibration.
