BUMPER - REAR - AVAILABILITY OF TRAILER HITCH PLATE WITH SAFETY CHAIN ATTACHMENT HOLES
LIGHT TRUCK:
1991-93 EXPLORER
ISSUE:
A new rear bumper trailer hitch plate with safety chain attachment holes is now available for installation on all Explorer vehicles built before January,
1993.
ACTION:
Replace the existing trailer hitch plate with a revised trailer hitch plate with safety chain attachment holes. Refer to the following procedure for service
details.
1.
Disconnect the license plate lamps from the rear bumper.
2.
Remove the hitch ball if required.
NOTE:
ALWAYS HANDLE THE BUMPER ASSEMBLY WITH CARE TO PREVENT ANY DAMAGE TO THE BUMPER SURFACE. ALWAYS PLACE
THE BUMPER ASSEMBLY ON A PADDED SURFACE DURING THE SERVICE PROCEDURE.
3.
Remove the rear bumper assembly from the vehicle by removing the two (2) nuts and retainer assembly attaching it to the right hand and left hand
frame ends.
4.
Remove the six (6) fasteners and hitch plate from the bumper assembly.
5.
Install the new trailer hitch plate with safety chain holes (F1TZ-17D826-C) to the bumper assembly using existing fasteners. Tighten the nuts to
35-46 lb.ft. (46.7-63.3 N-m). Refer to Figure 1.
NOTE:
EXTRA TIME MAY BE REQUIRED FOR RUSTED AND SHOULDER STRIPPED BOLTS.
