I-Beam Axle: Service and Repair
Front Axle Assembly (4X4)

1.

Raise and support vehicle. Install jack stands under radius arm brackets.

2.

Disconnect driveshaft from front axle yoke, then remove front wheels.

3.

Remove disc brake calipers and position aside. Do not let caliper hang down on brake hose.

Remove stabilizer bar and links.

5.

Disconnect steering linkage from spindle by removing the cotter pin and retaining nut.

6.

Place a jack under axle arm assembly and compress the coil spring, then remove nut which retains bottom of spring to axle arm.

7.

Lower axle until all spring tension is released, then remove the coil spring, spacer, seat and stud. The axle assembly must be supported when
removing spring and not be permitted to hang by the brake hose. If the length of the brake hose is not sufficient to provide adequate
clearance for spring removal, the disc brake caliper must be removed. If so, do not suspend caliper by brake hose.

8.

Disconnect shock absorber from radius arm bracket, then remove the bracket and radius arm.

9.

Remove pivot bolt securing right hand axle arm to crossmember.

10.

Remove clamps from axle shaft slip yoke and axle shaft, then slide rubber boot over yoke.

11.

Disconnect right driveshaft from slip yoke assembly, then lower jack and remove right axle arm assembly.

12.

Position another jack under differential housing, then remove bolt securing left axle arm to crossmember and remove left axle arm assembly.

13.

Reverse procedure to install. Tighten attaching nuts and bolts to specifications.
