Explorer 4WD V6-245 4.0L (1991)
1.
Remove the 7K470 speed sensor/wiring harness bracket and 7F293 speed sensor assembly from the transfer case.
2.
With the use of a light and looking into the speed sensor opening...
a.
Locate the white or black 7289 lock-up fork.
b.
Using a straight tool, push it forward toward the front of the vehicle.
^
If the lock-up fork does not move, this indicates that the lock-up assembly has moved back to the 2WD position and the transfer case is
functioning correctly.
^
If the lock-up fork moves about 3/8" (9.525 mm), this indicates that the lock-up assembly remained in the 4WD position or did not
disengage and must be repaired.
