ISSUE:
The following three articles are being republished in their entirety to clarify the service procedures for THREE DISTINCT AND SEPARATE
NOISE/VIBRATION CONCERNS. The dates of production corrections are indicated in each article's heading. Vehicles built after 1/1/92 incorporate all
appropriate fixes.
ACTION:
Refer to the following service procedures for corrective action to be taken for each specific RPM range.
2000-2400 RPM RANGE (PRODUCTION FIX: 1/2/91)
A vibration may be felt and a "moan" heard when accelerating with the engine operating in the 2000-2400 RPM range. This occurs because of a 4X4
drivetrain design characteristic. This is not a concern with 4X2 units or vehicles equipped with manual transmissions. Only the A4LD/4X4 combination
is affected.
After confirming the vibration and noise, install a new transfer case vibration damper. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1.
Check to be sure that the vehicle was built before 12/21/90.
2.
Confirm that the vibration and noise is in the 2000-2400 RPM range when accelerating. (All Explorers have tachometers.)
3.
Verify that the damper mounted on the rear of the transfer case has a white stripe painted on the edge of the mounting plate.
NOTE:
THIS MAY REQUIRE REMOVAL OF THE DAMPER BECAUSE THE WHITE STRIPE MAY BE LOCATED ON THE SIDE OF THE PLATE
WHICH FACES THE TRANSFER CASE.
4.
Replace the existing transfer case vibration damper with a new damper (F1TZ-4A263-B). The replacement part is all black, the original part has a
white stripe.
5.
Attach the damper to the transfer case with new bolts (N801380-S100). Tighten the bolts to 25-35 lb.ft. (34-47 N-m). If new bolts are not
available, coat the threads of the used bolts with Threadlock 262 (E2FZ-19554-B).

2800-3200 RPM RANGE (PRODUCTION FIX: 9/15/91)
A vibration may be felt and a "moan" heard when accelerating in the 2800-3200 rpm range. This occurs because of a 4x4 drivetrain design characteristic.
This is not a concern with 4x2 units.
Install an axle pinion nose damper (F2TZ-4A263-A) which is tuned to control this vibration and moan. Refer to the following procedure for service
details.

Confirm vehicle build date.

Confirm that the M50D 4x4 equipped Explorer was built between 12/21/90 and present.
