ISSUE:
There may be an unintended self-shift from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive during on road operation or engine start-up. This may occur
because of electrical interactions between the electric shift and other vehicle systems. Although this unintended shift into four wheel drive
can result in annoyance or dissatisfaction to the customer, it will not affect vehicle handling or stability.
ACTION:
If service is required, refer to the following diagnosis and service procedure to replace the necessary electrical shifting parts that will
prevent this from accidentally occurring.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
1.
Determine if the Touch Drive Electronic Shift is being accidentally depressed.
2.
If not, determine if the push button control, electronic control module, speed sensor, neutral start switch and electric motor are functioning
properly. Refer to the appropriate 1989/91 Light Truck Shop Manual, Volume 1, Section 07-06, for Shift Controls - Manual Transmission And
Transfer Case Diagnosis and Testing Procedure.
3.
If all components pass their individual tests and the instrument panel 4X4 and low range incandescent bulbs are not burnt out, use the following
service procedure to correct the concern.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
If the vehicle self-shifts from 2WD to 4WH or 4WL during on-road operation or during engine start-up, proceed as follows:
1.
Remove the control module and replace with (F1TZ-7E453-A) control module.
2.
Install the transfer case wiring repair kit (E9TZ-7A786-F). Refer to the instructions on sketch (UTA) # SK-63617 in the kit.
If the vehicle was shut down while in four-wheel high with only the 4X4 light illuminated, ^ But the low range light begins flashing on engine start-up

Or if the time between pushing the 4X4 button and illumination of the 4X4 light is three seconds or longer

Or if when shifting from four-wheel low to four-wheel high, the transfer case shifts to two-wheel high
...then, replace the electric motor as described in Step # 3.
3.
Replace the electric motor with electric motor kit (E8TZ-7G360-C) with the word "Lo-Spd." ink stamped on the gear housing cap.
