ALTERNATE TIRES APPROVED FOR OFF ROAD USE

This article supersedes TSB 05-22-20 to update the Service Procedure.
ISSUE
Some owners of 2004-2005 F-150's may desire an alternative tire for off road use. Ford engineering has approved the replacement of the original
equipment Passenger rated tires with LT245/70R17D Light Truck rated tires on vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 7200 lbs or less,
equipped with specific 17" wheels.
ACTION
Verify the vehicle has a GVW of 7200 lbs or less, and has the appropriate wheels installed. If so, the original Passenger rated tires may be replaced with
LT245/70R17D Light Truck rated tires at customer expense. The Light Truck rated tires are a different size and will require a different air pressure
setting, so a new certification label will also need to be installed. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE

THIS TIRE CHANGE SHOULD NOT SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECT SPEEDOMETER ACCURACY. TIRE REVOLUTIONS PER MILE ON THE
NEW TIRES IS 424. TIRE REVOLUTIONS PER MILE FOR THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT TIRES IS 404-434, DEPENDING ON BRAND
AND STYLE.
1.
Verify the vehicle has a GVW of 7200 lbs or less. If over 7200 lbs, do not continue with this TSB.
2.
Verify the vehicle is equipped with one (1) of the following wheels. If not, install one of the wheels listed with the new tires. Do not use any other
wheels. The engineering number can be found on the wheel which may require the wheel and tire assembly to be removed from the vehicle.
3.
Replace original equipment Passenger rated tires with Light Truck rated LT245/70R17D tires. All four (4) tires and the spare tire must be
converted to the same light truck tire at the same time. Tread type should be the same on all tires.
4.
Install the new tire certification label on the B-pillar, below the original certification label. The new label needs to be filled in to list the change in
tire pressure which is required for the LT tires. The appropriate specifications are listed in Figure 1.
