SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR REPAIR OR
REPLACEMENT OF COLUMN SHIFT CABLE
FORD:
2004-2006 F-150
ISSUE
When servicing or replacing 2004-2006 F-150 column shift cables, follow the Service Procedure below.
ACTION
During any repairs in the vicinity of the column shift cable, make sure the shift cable is securely reinstalled. (Figure 1)
NOTE
FOR ALL MODELS, THERE IS A ROUTING CLIP ON THE BELL HOUSING THAT IS INSTALLED DURING ASSEMBLY. THE CLIP IS
USED TO HOLD THE SHIFT CABLE ON COLUMN SHIFT VEHICLES ONLY. THE FLOOR SHIFT CABLE DOES NOT GO INTO THE
CLIP.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE
ANY REPAIRS WHICH REQUIRE THE COLUMN SHIFT CABLE TO BE REMOVED FROM THE BRACKETS AND ROUTING CLIP,
NEEDS TO BE SECURELY REINSTALLED AT ALL LOCKING POINTS. PUSH-CLICK-PULL PROCESS MUST BE FOLLOWED AT ALL
SHIFT CABLE ATTACHMENT BRACKETS AND BALL STUDS, TO VERIFY PROPER INSTALLATION OF SHIFT CABLE.
1.
Visually inspect shift cable for loose or damage components. Inspect connections at the following locations.
a.
Steering column shift cable locking bracket.
b.
Steering column shift cable ball stud.
c.
Transmission shift cable locking bracket.
d.
Transmission shift cable to manual lever ball stud.
e.
Transmission shift cable to route assist clip. Ensure that the cable is fully seated and does not interfere with the exhaust.
2.
Perform repairs as need, based on inspection.
a.
Loose cable: Reinstall and adjust the transmission shift cable
b.
Loose bracket/routing clip: Tighten the bolts to secure in correct orientation and adjust the transmission shift cable
c.
Damaged cable: Remove, install and adjust new shifter cable
