Fluid - A/T: Service and Repair
Drain and Refill
CAUTION: Use only Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or MERCON equivalent meeting Ford
specification ESP-M2C166-H. MERCON(R) automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM MUST BE SHUT OFF PRIOR TO HOISTING,
JACKING OR TOWING AN AIR SUSPENSION VEHICLE. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY TURNING OFF THE AIR
SUSPENSION SWITCH LOCATED IN THE RH KICK PANEL AREA. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN UNEXPECTED
INFLATION OR DEFLATION OF THE AIR SPRINGS WHICH MAY RESULT IN SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE DURING THESE
OPERATIONS.
CAUTION: When replacing the transmission fluid and filter and seal assembly, the torque converter; transmission cooler, cooler lines, and
cooler bypass valve must be thoroughly flushed to remove any contamination.
2. Disconnect the harness connector at the digital transmission range (DTR) sensor.
3. Remove the transmission fluid pan and gasket.
(1) Loosen, but do not remove the bolts.
(2) Remove the front and side bolts.
(3) Lower the front of the fluid pan and allow the fluid to drain.
(4) Remove the remaining fluid pan bolts and the fluid pan.
NOTE: Do not discard the gasket unless damaged. This is a reusable gasket.
4. Remove the torque converter drain plug cover.
