Companion Flange: Service and Repair
Front
REMOVAL
CAUTION: This operation disturbs the differential pinion bearing preload. This preload must be carefully reset when assembling.
NOTE: Replacement of the front axle drive pinion seal involves removal and installation of the pinion nut and front axle universal joint flange.
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM MUST BE SHUT OFF PRIOR TO HOISTING,
JACKING OR TOWING AN AIR SUSPENSION VEHICLE. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY TURNING OFF THE AIR
SUSPENSION SWITCH LOCATED IN THE RH KICK PANEL AREA. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN UNEXPECTED
INFLATION OR DEFLATION OF THE AIR SPRINGS WHICH MAY RESULT IN SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE DURING THESE
OPERATIONS.
2. Index mark the front driveshaft to the axle companion flange.
CAUTION: Do not allow the driveshaft to hang unsupported.
3. Disconnect the front driveshaft.
(1) Remove the four driveshaft slip yoke to front drive axle companion flange bolts.
(2) Carefully disconnect the front driveshaft.
4. Using an inch pound torque wrench measure the torque required to maintain rotation of the pinion through several revolutions. Record the
measurement for reference during installation.
5. Mark the companion flange in relation to the pinion stem.
6. Loosen the pinion nut.
