Article 97-9-20 is being republished in its entirety as part of a consolidated 7.3L diagnostic aid booklet.
ISSUE
A "moaning" noise during 1500-2000 RPM on neutral engine run-up, or while driving under load, may be heard on some vehicles. This may be caused
by the noises transmiffed from the powertrain-to-frame connections.
ACTION
Repair or replace the following areas:

Engine mounts
^
Transmission mount
^
Transmission crossmember
^
Engine position in the vehicle
^
Exhaust tuning code
^
Exhaust hanger isolators
Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Remove the catalytic converter exhaust hanger rod which is outboard or closest to the right frame rail on vehicles built prior to 2/23/96. This will
leave one hanger rod from the front converter pipe to the bracket for improved exhaust resonance isolation. For location, refer to the 1996 F-Series
Powertrain/Drivetrain Service Manual, Page 09-00-07, View "A".
2.
Replace the RH engine mount with revised Engine Mount (F7TZ-6038-CA) on vehicles built prior to 1/17/97.
3.
Make sure the engine is "decked" in the frame without binding the engine and transmission by leveling the engine as follows:
a.
Back out the four (4) nuts on the engine mounts.
b.
Observe the location of the engine mount's bottom stud on the left and right hand side to the crossmember's key hole slot.
c.
Position the engine so that the bottom engine mount stud is the same distance from the bottom of the slot on the left and right side within 1
mm.
d.
Tighten the engine mount nuts to 96-127 Nm (71-94 lb-ft).
4.
Replace the transmission mount with Transmission Mount (F6TZ-6068-B) on vehicles built prior to 8/12/96.
5.
Retorque the transmission crossmember by using the procedure referred to in TSB 97-3-10, (D) Transmission Crossmember, to relieve any
binding or stress that may be present.
6.
Re-evaluate the vehicle for improvement.
