Steering pull/drift may be attributable to tire conicity (the tendency of a tire to be out-of-round axially as shown in Figure 19). This is the most probable
cause of steering pull/drift on vehicles equipped with LT-215/235/ 85R16 D/E tires. The diagnostic procedures listed in Section 19 of the Light Truck
Shop Manual should be followed, beginning with conicity which is the first step listed.
Investigate tire variations. Tires with manufacturing variations cause drift/pull. Concerns such as conicity may be encountered with new tires or develop
after routine tire rotation or replacement.
Service Action for the Conicity Issues (for radial tires only)
1.
Set all tires to the same air pressure, including spare, if equipped with a full size wheel and tire. Do not use temporary spare for diagnosis.
2.
Replace the left front with the spare, if equipped with a full size wheel and tire, (do not use a temporary spare for diagnosis), test drive and
evaluate pulling condition.
3.
If pull has not been affected, install the original tire back on the left front and replace the right front with the spare. Test drive and evaluate pulling
condition.
4.
Continue by replacing the spare for the left rear tire and then the right rear tire. Test drive in each case.
5.
If pulling condition has not improved, tire conicity is not an issue on this vehicle. If pulling condition has been eliminated, tire that has been
substituted with the spare should be replaced.
6.
Reset tire pressures to vehicle specification.
