DIESEL FUEL EQUIVALENCY TESTER (6.9L DIESEL) - OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

LIGHT TRUCKS 1983-84 E & F SERIES

Field reports indicate that in some cases technicians are misplacing the operating instructions for the Rotunda Diesel Fuel Equivalency Tester. The Fuel
Equivalency Tester (with operating instructions) is supplied as part of the Rotunda 078-00100 Dynamic Timing Meter. A copy of these instructions is
shown below.

Without the Diesel Fuel Hydrometer reading and the corresponding Cetane rating as shown below, specified Dynamic Injection Timing cannot be set
properly.

For reference only, TSB 83-24-23 lists the dynamic timing specifications related to fuel Cetane value.

ROTUNDA 078-00121 DIESEL FUEL EQUIVALENCY TESTER

Fuel quality is determined by measuring the specific gravity of the fuel between 75~ F and 95~ F. Poor quality fuel can degrade diesel engine
performance.

PROCEDURE TO MEASURE FUEL QUALITY

1.

Bring the engine to normal operating temperature.

2.

Locate the underhood fuel filter and install the pressure test kit (Rotunda #019-00002) adapter (as outlined in the Truck Shop Manual).

3.

Fill a clean quart jar 3/4 full of diesel fuel.

4.

Fill the glass hydrometer container with fuel until the hydrometer floats.

5.

Gently spin the unit to break the surface tension, read number at the bottom of the fuel meniscus and record.

6.

Refer to the following chart for fuel cetane value.

7.

See the Truck Shop Manual for corrective action procedures.

UNPACKAGING INSTRUCTIONS

This is a glass hydrometer. The float portion is very delicate, so use extreme care when handling it, both before and after unpacking it.

1.

To prepare the tester for use, carefully remove the rubber bulb by pulling it away from the glass cylinder with your hands. DO NOT use metal
tools! Work carefully, so that you don't break the glass.

2.

After the bulb is removed, remove the red rubber bumper and the float. Remove the foam plastic strip and save for repacking. Reassemble by
carefully placing the float (stem out) in the glass cylinder. Fit the red rubber bumper into the cylinder as much as you would fit a cork in a bottle.

3.

Dampen the rubber bulb and the top of the glass cylinder with water and reassemble carefully.
