Removal 

All vehicles
1. Prepare the vehicle for crankshaft vibration damper removal.

1. Install a suitable memory saver.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable(s). 
3. Remove the radiator. 
4. Remove the drive belt. 

2. Raise the vehicle. 

3. Check the crankshaft vibration damper runout.

1. Remove the paint from the face of the crankshaft vibration damper at four points 90 degrees apart.
2. Attach the special tool to the cylinder block. Position the special tool on one of the unpainted surfaces.
3. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the crankshaft forward. Zero the dial indicator.

4. NOTE:  Pry the crankshaft at the same point and in only one direction to eliminate possible error caused by crankshaft end play.

Rotate the crankshaft 90 degrees. Pry the crankshaft forward. Record the measurement. Repeat at each unpainted surface.

If the runout exceeds specification, install a new crankshaft vibration damper.

Vehicles with manual transmission 

4. Prevent the crankshaft from turning.

1. Set the parking brake.
2. Place the transmission in gear.

Vehicles with automatic transmission

5. Prevent the crankshaft from turning.

1. Remove four bolts and the torque converter access cover.
2. Install a suitable flywheel holding tool.

All vehicles 

6. Remove the bolt and washer.
