Attachment III - Technical Information
OVERVIEW
Certain F-250 and F-350 4x4 SRW (single rear wheel) vehicles may have been assembled with front driveshafts that are too long. This procedure will
provide the detail to correctly identify an affected driveshaft and refer you to the appropriate workshop manual section if replacement is necessary.
INSPECTION
1.
Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist.
2.
Inspect to see if the entire front driveshaft is painted black. If necessary, wipe it clean.
3.
If the driveshaft is black, no service is required. Lower and release the vehicle.
4.
If the driveshaft is not painted black, measure the length of the tube from the centers of the welds. See Figure 1.
5.
If the driveshaft tube measures less than 524 mm (20-5/8 inches), no service is required. Lower and release the vehicle.
6.
If the driveshaft tube measures 524 mm (20-5/8 inches) or greater, the driveshaft must be replaced. Refer to Section 205-01 of the appropriate
workshop manual for replacement instructions.
IMPORTANT REPAIR INFORMATION
The torque specification for the bolts at the driveshaft-to-transfer case connection (rear bolts) is listed incorrectly in the workshop manual. Please refer to
the specifications listed below when installing the new driveshaft.
