Description and Operation

Electro-hydraulic power steering

The electro-hydraulic power steering system uses an electrically driven hydraulic pump and a conventional rack and pinion steering gear. This produces precise steering operation and steering assistance.

The electro-hydraulic power steering system is designed to operate without a steering angle sensor. When the steering wheel is turned there is a steering fluid pressure change in the steering lines. The pump motor maintains pump speed and this will increase or decrease the electrical current flow through the motor. Using information from the vehicle wheel speed sensor and the pump motors response to the steering wheel turning, the electro-hydraulic power steering system calculates if it is necessary to change the pump motor to a different speed mode. The electro-hydraulic power steering system has three operating speed modes, low speed, high speed and ultra high speed.

In the electro-hydraulic power steering system, a brushless direct current motor drives the hydraulic pump.

In more than 85% of all driving situations, the power steering pump operates at the low speed mode and consumes less than 4 amps.

NOTE:
NOTE:The electro-hydraulic power steering pump must be filled and bled as specified in the filling and bleeding procedures. For additional information, refer to: (211-00 Steering System - General Information)
Power Steering System Filling - 1.6L Duratorq-TDCi (DV) Diesel (General Procedures),
Power Steering System Bleeding - 1.6L Duratorq-TDCi (DV) Diesel (General Procedures).

The hydraulic pump is a gear type pump and has a resonance chamber incorporated into the pump body to reduce noise emissions.

A pressure limiting valve is built into the pump housing which limits the hydraulic fluid pressure to a maximum of 103 bar.
