Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to: Air Cleaner - 1.3L Duratec-8V (Rocam) (303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering, Removal and Installation). | | -
Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to: Battery Tray (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Removal and Installation). | | -
Disconnect the engine central connector. | | -
Loosen the strut and spring assembly top mount nuts by three turns on both sides. | | -
Install the special tools. | | -
Remove the transaxle upper retaining bolts. | | -
Remove the front wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation). | | -
Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector. | | -
Remove the gearshift cables cover. | | -
Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle. - Detach the gearshift cables and the selector cable from the selector levers.
- Turn the abutment sleeve clockwise and detach the cables from the bracket.

Remove the accessory drive belt cover. | | -
Remove the engine support insulator. | | -
CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage. Detach the lower arm from the wheel knuckle on both sides. | | -
CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees. CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal. If the halfshaft seal has been touched by the halfshaft spline, install a new halfshaft seal. NOTE:Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress. Using the special tool, detach the left-hand halfshaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side. - Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

NOTE:Discard the intermediate shaft center bearing cap and locknuts. Remove the intermediate shaft center bearing cap. - Remove the locknuts.
- Detach the heat shield.
- Remove the center bearing cap.

CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees. CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft seal. If the halfshaft seal has been touched by the intermediate shaft splines, install a new halfshaft seal. NOTE:Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress. Detach the halfshaft and the intermediate shaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side. - Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

Detach the coolant expansion tank from the bracket and position it to one side. | | -
Loosen the engine mount nuts. | | -
CAUTION:If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water. Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder supply line. | | -
Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector (if equipped). | | -
Detach the exhaust flexible pipe from the catalytic converter. | | -
Remove the battery tray support bracket. | | -
Remove the engine and transaxle rear mount. | | -
Using the special tools, lower the engine and transaxle assembly. | | -
Remove the engine and transaxle rear mount retaining bracket. | | -
Remove the transaxle lower retaining bolts. | | -
NOTE:Secure the transaxle with a retaining strap on the transmission jack. | | -
Remove the transaxle left-hand retaining bolt. | | -
Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors. | | -
Remove the starter motor. | | -
Remove the transaxle right-hand retaining bolts. | | |
