  1. Verify the customer concern.

Are the DRL dipped beam, DRL parking lamps and DRL license plate lamps inoperative?
Yes
- DRL parking lamps, DRL dipped beams and the DRL license plate lamps are inoperative, vehicles built before 08/2005: GO to A2.
- DRL parking lamps, DRL dipped beams and the DRL license plate lamps are inoperative, vehicles built after 08/2005: GO to A4.
No
- DRL parking lamps and DRL license plate lamps are inoperative: GO to A9.
- DRL-dipped beam inoperative:GO to A11.
A2: CHECK FUSE F40 (10 A) (CJB).

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect fuse F40 (10 A) (CJB).

CHECK fuse F40 (10 A) (CJB).

Is the fuse OK?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F40 (10 A) (CJB) and CHECK the operation of the system. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A3: CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO FUSE F40 (10 A) (CJB)

Connect fuse F40 (10 A) (CJB).

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between fuse F40 (10 A) and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
CHECK and if necessary INSTALL A NEW CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE AND RECTIFY the break in the voltage supply of fuse F40 (10A) (CJB) using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A4: CHECK FUSE F31 (10 A) (CJB).

Disconnect fuse F31 (10 A) (CJB).

CHECK fuse F31 (10 A) (CJB).

Is the fuse OK.?
Yes

RENEW fuse F31 (10 A) (CJB) and CHECK the operation of the system. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

Measure the voltage between the automatic headlamps relay, socket C418, pin 3, circuit 15-LE29A (GN/BK), socket side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes

LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuits between fuse F31 (10 A) (CJB) and the automatic headlamps relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A7: CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY OF THE AUTOMATIC HEADLAMPS RELAY - CONTROL CIRCUIT, FOR OPEN CIRCUIT

Measure the voltage between the automatic headlamps relay, socket C418, pin 1, circuit 15-LE36 (GN/WH), socket side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between soldered connection S1 and the automatic headlamps relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A8: CHECK THE GROUND CONNECTION OF THE AUTOMATIC HEADLAMPS RELAY FOR OPEN CIRCUIT

Measure the resistance between the automatic headlamps relay, socket C418, pin 2, circuit 31-LE36 (BK), socket side and ground.

Is a resistance of less than 2 ohms registered?
Yes
RENEW the automatic headlamps relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between soldered connection S15 and the automatic headlamps relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A9: CHECK CIRCUIT 15-LE32 (GN/WH) FOR OPEN CIRCUIT

Disconnect headlamp switch from connector C338.

Measure the voltage between the headlamp switch C338, pin 15, circuit 15-LE32 (GN/WH), wiring harness side and ground.

- Vehicles built before 08/2005: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between fuse F40 (10A) (CJB) and the headlamp switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Vehicles built after 08/2005: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the automatic headlamps relay and the headlamp switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A10: CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH

Ignition switch in position 0.

Connect a fused jumper wire (10 A) at the headlamp switch, connector C338, between pin 15, circuit 15-LE32 (GN/WH) and pin 13, circuit 29S-DB8 (OG/BU), wiring harness side.

Ignition switch in position II.

CHECK parking lamps.

Do the parking lamps illuminate?
Yes
INSTALL A NEW headlamp switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the headlamp switch and bridge (CJB) using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

OPERATE headlamp flasher.

CHECK the headlamp.

Is headlamp flasher working?
Yes
No
- Vehicles built before 08/2005: LOCATE and RECTIFY break in circuit 15-LE29 (GN/BK), between fuse F40 (10 A) (CJB) and headlamp switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Vehicles built after 08/2005: LOCATE and RECTIFY break in circuit 15-LE29 (GN/BK), between the automatic headlamps relay and the headlamp switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A12: CHECK FUSE F19 (15 A) (CJB).

Disconnect fuse F19 (15 A) (CJB).

CHECK fuse F19 (15 A) (CJB).

Is the fuse OK?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F19 (15 A) (CJB) and check the operation of the system. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A13: CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO FUSE F19 (15 A) (CJB)

Connect fuse F19 (15 A) (CJB).

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between fuse F19 (15 A) (CJB) and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes

RECTIFY the break in the voltage supply of fuse F19 (15 A) (CJB) using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A14: CHECK FUSE F11 (15 A) (CJB).

Disconnect fuse F11 (15 A) (CJB).

CHECK fuse F11 (15 A) (CJB).

Is the fuse OK?
Yes

RENEW fuse F11 (15 A) (CJB) and check the operation of the system. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A15: CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH

Connect fuse F11 (15 A) (CJB).

Disconnect headlamp switch from connector C338.

Connect a fused jumper wire (10 A) to the headlamp switch, connector C338, between pin 8, circuit 15-LE29 (GN/BK)/15-LE14 (GN/RD) and pin 4, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), wiring harness side.

Ignition switch in position II.

CHECK the DRL dipped beam.

Does the DRL dipped beam illuminate?
Yes
INSTALL A NEW headlamp switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
A16: CHECK VOLTAGE SUPPLY OF DRL RELAY - LOAD CURRENT CIRCUIT - FOR OPEN CIRCUIT

Disconnect DRL relay from socket C409.

LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between fuse F19 (15A) (CJB) and the DRL relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A17: CHECK VOLTAGE SUPPLY OF DRL RELAY - CONTROL CIRCUIT - FOR OPEN CIRCUIT

Measure the voltage between the DRL relay, socket C409, pin 1, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), socket side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?

LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the headlamp switch and DRL relay (DRL) using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A18: CHECK THE GROUND CONNECTION TO THE DRL RELAY FOR OPEN CIRCUIT

Measure the resistance between the DRL relay, socket C409, pin 2, circuit 31-LE6 (BK), socket side and ground.

LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the DRL relay and soldered connection S15 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A19: CHECK THE DRL RELAY

Using a fused jumper wire (15 A) at the daytime running lamp relay, connect socket C409, pin 3 circuit 29-LE7 (OG/BU) and pin 5, circuit 15S-LE8B (GN/RD), socket side.

Ignition switch in position II.

CHECK the DRL dipped beam.

Does the DRL dipped beam illuminate?
Yes
INSTALL A NEW DRL relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
A20: CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO FUSE F11 (15 A) (CJB)

Connect DRL relay to socket C409.

Measure the voltage between fuse F11 (15 A) (CJB) and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
CHECK and if necessary RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
RECTIFY the break in circuit(s) 15S-LE8B (GN/RD), 15S-LE8A (DRL resistor (GN/RD)) or 15S-LE8 (GN/RD) between the DRL relay and fuse F11 (15 A) (CJB) using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

PINPOINT TEST B : DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS ARE ON, WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF

B2: CHECK THE DRL RELAY

Disconnect DRL relay from socket C409.

Measure the voltage between the DRL relay, socket C409, pin 5, circuit 15S-LE8B (GN/RD), socket side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
RENEW the DRL relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
B3: NARROW DOWN THE FAULT

Disconnect fuse F11 (15 A) (CJB).

Measure the voltage between the DRL relay, socket C409, pin 5, circuit 15S-LE8B (GN/RD), socket side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuit(s) connected to soldered connection S27 or S26 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK and INSTALL A NEW CJB if necessary. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in circuits between fuse F11 (15 A) (CJB) (output side) and bridge (CJB) using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system. If the fault persists,
REFER to: Scheinwerfer (417-01, Diagnosis and Testing).
B4: NARROW DOWN THE FAULT

Disconnect fuse F40 (10 A) (CJB).

Check the daytime running lamps.

Do the daytime running lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to fuse F40 (10 A) (CJB), input side, using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
B5: NARROW DOWN THE FAULT

Disconnect Automatic headlamps relay from socket C418.

Check the daytime running lamps.

Are all daytime running lamps lit permanently?
Yes
No
B6: CHECK THE CONTROL CIRCUIT OF THE AUTOMATIC HEADLAMPS RELAY FOR SHORT TO BATTERY VOLTAGE

Measure the voltage between the automatic headlamps relay, socket C418, pin 1, circuit 15-LE36 (GN/WH), socket side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to soldered connection S1 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
RENEW the automatic headlamps relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
B7: NARROW DOWN THE FAULT

Disconnect headlamp switch from connector C338.

Check the daytime running lamps.

Does the DRL dipped beam illuminate?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY short to battery voltage in circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE) between headlamp switch and DRL relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
- DRL parking lamps and DRL license plate lamps illuminate continuously:
REFER to: Parkleuchten, Rückleuchten, Kennzeichenleuchten (417-01, Diagnosis and Testing).
- Daytime running lamps do not illuminate continuously: GO to B8.
B8: CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH

Measure the voltage between the headlamp switch, connector C338, pin 15, circuit 15-LE32 (GN/WH), wiring harness side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
- Vehicles built before 08/2005: LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to fuse F40 (10 A) (CJB), output side, using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- Vehicles built after 08/2005: LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to the automatic headlamps relay, socket C418, pin 5 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
INSTALL A NEW headlamp switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
