Diagnosis and Testing

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical damage.

  • PCV crankcase vent oil separator
  • Electrical connector(s)
  • Wiring harness
  • Fuse(s)
  • Relay
  • EGR valve
  • Powertain control module (PCM)
  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the cause is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart.

CLEAN or INSTALL new PCV components as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

Oil in the air intake system

Restriction in PCV separator.
*
CLEAN or INSTALL a new PCV separator.
REFER to: Crankcase Vent Oil Separator (303-08A Engine Emission Control - 1.4L Duratec-16V (Sigma)/1.6L Duratec-16V (Sigma)/1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma), Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.

PCV valve permanently open.

INSTALL a new PCV valve. TEST the system for normal operation.

Excessive crankcase pressure

Worn or damaged engine components.
